A Nontraditional Twist

This isn't the traditional approach to a Family Thanksgiving dinner but it's a stress-free idea to make any holiday meal come together seamlessly. Share the responsibilities, when you invite friends and family over for thanksgiving dinner this year ask them to bring their signature dishes. Everyone has a signature dish, Aunt Diane bakes The Best sweet potato pie, Cousin Gail cooks the tastiest green beans with potatoes, and Grandma Lee knows best when it comes to whipping up a batch of macaroni and cheese.

No, I retract that statement. Not everyone has a signature dish, some people are culinary challenged. Ask those members of your family to bring something practical, like napkins, to-go boxes, a board game or soft drinks.

Oh, and since you are hosting the event it's only fair that you prepare or provide the main dish. Cooking a turkey isn't too terribly difficult, making the turkey eatible is when the recipies can get a little challenging.

So don't hesitiate to get help from the experts, visit well known cooking websites and choose a recipe to follow. Then again, if you truly are culinary challenged it might be best to order in for the main dish. There are loads of restaurants around town and online who will stuff, bake, or fry your turkey. You haven't heard the best part, some restaurants will even arrange to deliver the main dish right to your door.

Cater to the Kids, Feed their Imaginations and Creativity

It's quite unusual to have a family dinner and not have little ones running around. Have activities on hand that capture their attention. You'd be surprised by the amount of entertainment a child can get out of a coloring book and a box of crayons. Construction paper and a glue stick can keep a little mind occupied for hours.

There are several projects that the kids can participate in that will keep their little hands and minds busy. Set up a recreational area for the children, you might also consider setting up an indoor and outdoor play area. It can be as simple and easy as arranging an area that's stocked with the board games like checkers, connect four, and a deck of Uno cards.

Create an arts and crafts table, equip it with coloring books, crayons, markers, construction paper, glue sticks, safety scissors, and glitter. Well, maybe not the glitter, it can get a little messy. Jewelry crafting kits, water color paint, poster boards, and anything else that might appeal to their creative eye will work wonders.

If you set up an area outdoors, get a couple of bottles of magic bubbles or you can make your own bubble solution by adding a couple of drops of dish soap to a cup of water. Get the kids some jump ropes, bouncy balls, pom poms, water guns, water balloons, and other enticing outdoor games that jumps out at you while you're browsing the aisles at the nearest dollar store.

You can also set up an entertainment area with a television so that the little ones can watch cartoons and movies. You may also have access to a game console that the kids can use to play the latest video games. The key is to have plenty of options available so the kids aren't instantly bored.

Catch the express train down Memory Lane

Who's the keeper of the photos in your family? Who has the largest collections of photo albums and pictures or videos of family gatherings? Taking time to browse through old pictures or watching clips of family movies can trigger great memories. Ask some of your guests to bring their favorite photo albums along this year.

Open the albums and strategically place them on a coffee table or in a high traffic area. It will only take one person to start thumbing through the pictures, and before you know it everyone will be gathered around laughing and sharing memorable stories. You might even learn something new about your family history.

One final touch is to have the soft melody of Christmas carols playing in the back ground. How could anyone be stressed while humming along to the tunes of their favorite Christmas songs?
